This Hearse Has a Curse! Dracula’s the name.

drac-sketch

Rubber-Hose Dracula drag racing?! Will the horror ever subside around here??

There are lots of neat songs from days gone by about monsters dancing, surfing and even drag racing. Here we have Dracula in his Deuce rat rod roadster with dropped axle, disc brakes, and coilovers, whammy in the front and four on the floor. Full evinrude in the jimmy-caw-caw, and it’s draggin’. Finished black and white 30’s rubber-hose cartoon tomorrow!

The tune today is HOT. Seriously, one of the best Halloween tunes out there and I have my bud Trev to thank for it.

I Survived Manos: The Hands of Fate – sketches

Some sketches today for a t-shirt idea that came from “The B-Movie Cast.” They’ve been talking about Manos: The Hands of Fate lately, and, judging from their reactions, the listeners seem to feel it’s the worst movie ever made. I’ve only experienced the MST3K version. I don’t think there’s any reason to try to watch it without Joel and the Bots.

I have the final look in my head, something that should look good in Adobe Illustrator. Is it possible to make Torgo hip? Even with those monstrous thighs? We’ll see tomorrow.

I recently got a Pogo Sketch stylus for my iPhone, so I’ve been sketching in an app called “Sketchbook Mobile.” So far I like it, though it does feel a bit slow and non-responsive at times. But hey, I’m drawing on my phone! Here’s Torgo tripping, drawn in Sketchbook Mobile:

And to get you into the mood, here’s some chilling music from Manos: The Hands of Fate.

Shrimpenstein Sketch. The Countdown to Halloween Begins!

www.countdowntohalloween.com

It’s October!

shrimpenstein-sketch-ems

Shrimpenstein! was a kooky kid’s show that aired in Los Angeles in 1967-68. In the show, Dr. Von Schtick pals around with Shrimpy, a monster he created when he accidentally dropped a bag of jellybeans into his Frankenstein machine. I’ve only seen the one episode that’s on YouTube, but that was enough to make me a fan.

And so, The Countdown to Halloween begins! So does my month of daily blog posts on the theme “Haunted” for NaBloPoMo (National Blog Posting Month.) I have all sorts of creepy crawly cartoons planned for the next 31 days, and I’ve given my website a makeover to help give you the Halloween Heebie-Jeebies.

Fish N’ Chips Really Got Me

FnC-pinup-ems

A pinup for Steve Hamaker’s Fish N’ Chips comic. I’m a fan of Sixties power pop. Their outfits are straight out of an old Kinks publicity shot. The sketch:

Countdown to Countdown to Halloween!

www.countdowntohalloween.com

In less than a week’s time, my website and blog will be overtaken by the spirit of Halloween. The wind will howl. The leaves will crackle. Ghosts and goblins will practice their terror with ghoulish delight. My ghastly goal is to produce one petrifying post each day as we count down to All Hallows’ Even.

I’m participating in this countdown with a bunch of other bewitched bloggers. Countdown to Halloween will have a list. It will be…

… a tomb of dread, a virtual cornucopia of amazing stories, photos, comics, reviews, crafts, toys, songs, radio plays, jokes, and general commentary on a holiday that a lot of us hold dear.

Get involved, foolish mortals.

Stealing Lightning – An introduction to Sketches

The Sketches category will hopefully be my biggest category. I’m trying to get into the habit of sketching everyday again, even if it’s just for 5 or 10 minutes. If the stats they quoted in art school are true, only about 1 in 1000 of these posts will have a sketch that’s any good.

To start things off, here’s a character design for a comic project submission that bore no fruit. I’ll post several pieces from the project over the next few weeks.
