Probably not the right quote for a Union soldier, but I thought it shed insight on the Civil War:
I hate the idea of causes, and if I had to choose between betraying my country and betraying my friend, I hope I should have the guts to betray my country.
— E. M. Forster
P.S. My friend and I were talking about the Civil War this week at work. He suggested a word balloon that I remember being funny at the time but has since escaped me.
P.P.S. Who’s to say Union soldiers didn’t yell like furies too? Besides historians, I mean.
