What is this Howie Philly Record?
I just recently moved from Boston to Cincinnati, Ohio. A few weeks before I left, I was at this estate sale in a town off the coast just north of Boston, going through some antique vinyl records when I found a very peculiar children’s record. It’s called “Howie Philly Sings Himself Crazy.” I’m not sure if anyone has heard of this kid’s record before, but it’s pretty odd.
The first song is simply called “Happy Song.” I managed to get a decent recording off my Dad’s old record player so you can hear what it sounds like.
This song is definitely the best song on the album, and that’s not saying much. From here, the songs get progressively more, well, sinister. There are strange sounds, like bubbling and even some gibbering. By the end of this “kid’s” record, it’s almost as if Howie Philly has gone loony, like he’s witnessing the “blackness of space illimitable; unimagined space alive with motion and music, and having no semblance of anything on earth.” I should really just throw the thing away… but it is intriguing…
